Aiming for a bullseye the size of a quarter from 25 yards away, Bob King takes a shot during a muzzleloader match at the Newport Rifle Club. Firing replicas of rifles used during the mid-19th century, Newport Rifle Club members recently held their first muzzleloader shoot of 2015. It was practice for a competition with Tiverton Rod and Gun Club in August.Shooting at 25 yards, Roy Lauth of Newport took first place, John Camisa of Portsmouth took second, Bob King of Middletown placed third and Paul Dutra of Middletown finished in fourth.At 50 yards, King was first, Lauth second, Camisa third. Competitors fired replicas of percussion cap rifles used between 1823 and 1870 when they were replaced by cartridge-firing guns.Started in 1876 by W. Milton Farrow, who was recognized as one of the finest long-distance shots of his day, Newport Rifle Club is the oldest continuously operating gun club in the U.S. For the first time in several years, the club has openings for new members.
